Recent Actions

December 15, 2020 - Harris County Commissioners Court authorized $14,443 for design, bidding, and construction phase engineering services for construction of detention basins on City of Houston right-of-way at South Braeswood Boulevard and West 610 Loop.

May 19, 2020 – Harris County Commissioners Court approved new Bond ID added to the 2018 Bond Program List.

April 28, 2020 – Harris County Commissioners Court approved an additional $28,060 for design, bidding and construction stage engineering services.

April 28, 2020 – Harris County Commissioners Court approved an agreement with the City of Houston for detention on the city’s right-of-way in connection with this project.

August 27, 2019 – Harris County Commissioners Court authorized an agreement with the City of Houston in support of this project, with no funds required by the Flood Control District.

April 30, 2019 – Harris County Commissioners Court authorized a $224,960 contract with an engineering firm for design, bidding, and construction phase engineering services for construction of detention basins on City of Houston right-of-way at South Braeswood Boulevard and West 610 Loop.

March 12, 2019 – Harris County Commissioners Court authorized negotiations with an engineering firm for design, bidding and construction phase engineering services in connection with this project.

January 29, 2019 – Harris County Commissioners Court authorized negotiations with the City of Houston for stormwater detention on City of Houston right-of-way at South Braeswood Boulevard and West 610 Loop.

The stormwater detention basin project at South Braeswood Boulevard and West 610 Loop is nearing the final stages of construction. During this stage, the Flood Control District is removing trees in order to add 12 million gallons of additional storage to protect the area during periods of heavy rainfall. Trees also had to be removed along the esplanades of South Braeswood Boulevard to install a new drainage pipe that will transfer overflow stormwater between the area neighborhoods and the new basins. The Flood Control District has made every effort to save or transfer as many existing trees as possible during this project. A significant tree planting effort will follow after construction has concluded which will include the planting of various sized trees to more quickly re-establish the forested canopy. However, the trees removed along the esplanades will not be replaced due to the placement of the new drainage infrastructure. Project Description

The project is a partnership effort with the City of Houston to construct a series of stormwater detention basins located at Braeswood Boulevard between Endicott Lane and South Post Oak Road to reduce the risk of flooding in the vicinity of the basins and along Brays Bayou. 

Consisting of three separate storage cells, the project will collectively hold approximately 37 acre-feet (more than 12 million gallons) of stormwater during heavy rain events. Additionally, after the project is constructed, tree plantings will take place to replace the trees affected during construction. The project is expected to take four months to complete. 

The contractor will use heavy construction equipment such as dump trucks, excavators and bulldozers to remove trees, vegetation and excavated soil. Motorists are urged to be alert to truck traffic when passing near construction access points.
