Contract to be Awarded For Final Phase of Vogel Creek Construction

Harris County Commissioners Court on March 21 authorized the Harris County Flood Control District to award a $9.8 million contract to complete the final phase of the Vogel Creek Conveyance Improvement Project in northwest Houston.
It is expected that construction will take 20 to 24 months, weather permitting.
1% (100-year) Floodplain Expected to be Contained
Once the project is complete, the 1% (100-year) floodplain is expected to be contained within the creek’s banks. In other words, Vogel Creek, which has a history of flooding, should be able to handle a 1% (100-year) flood. A 100-year flood has a 1 percent chance of occurring any given year. Prior to the project, the creek could handle roughly a 50% (2-year) flood, or a flood that has a 50 percent chance of occurring any given year.
Last of Three Construction Phases
Construction on the final phase is expected to begin in May and will consist of further widening and deepening of the creek from White Oak Bayou to Arncliffe Drive, approximately 8,300 feet. In addition, the project calls for the replacement of four roadway bridges (three by the Flood Control District and one by the City of Houston).
The first phase of the project included partially enlarging the creek from White Oak Bayou to Cypress Grove Lane. The second phase consisted of partially enlarging the creek from Long Creek to Arncliffe.
