Construction Reaches the Halfway Mark on White Oak Bayou Tributary Near Jersey Village
November 25, 2009
Channel construction on a new White Oak Bayou tributary is now half-complete. This project will further reduce flooding risks in Jersey Village, much of which lies in the 1% (100-year) and 0.2% (500-year) floodplain and has a history of flooding.
The $5.3 million channel will divert water from White Oak Bayou around the city of Jersey Village during times of intense rain and will work in conjunction with two stormwater detention basins recently excavated upstream of the city, lessening the possibility of White Oak Bayou spilling its banks.

Taking the Load off of White Oak Bayou
The 1.2-mile Jersey Village Channel is designed to carry 30 to 40 percent of stormwater from White Oak Bayou during times of high flows. Construction began on June 1 and is expected to be complete by the end of 2010, weather permitting.
The new channel begins at White Oak Bayou west of the Jersey Meadow Golf Course and flows eastward paralleling Honolulu Street to just west of Gessner Road. The channel then flows to the south and reconnects with White Oak Bayou north of West Gulf Bank Road
Part of the Bigger Picture
Since the 1980s, the Flood Control District has widened and deepened White Oak Bayou from Cole Creek (near Tidwell Road) upstream to Beltway 8 in addition to constructing ten stormwater detention basins that have a combined storage capacity of 1.2 billion gallons, or 2.3 Reliant "Astrodomes" of stormwater.
Such projects, including voluntary home buyout programs, have spared hundreds of homes from flooding in the White Oak Bayou watershed alone.
