PROJECT DESCRIPTION

This maintenance project to construct a concrete drop structure and stilling basin on the K117-00-00 channel was completed in August 2022. The project is located where a concrete-lined channel section running down the middle of Briarcreek Boulevard transitions to an earthen channel downstream (north) of Old Ranch Road, onto property owned by the Flood Control District.

The drop structure and stilling basin were added to reduce the stormwater’s energy at this transition point. Concrete projections that are part of the drop structure, also known as a “baffle,” as well as the stilling basin at the foot of the drop structure, now help to slow the stormwater and reduce erosion on the earthen channel.

The project was originally planned after the Tax Day Storm of 2016, but a more permanent repair was designed following the subsequent Hurricane Harvey storm of 2017 and later rain events. The project site is adjacent to another future Flood Control District project, described here.
