LONGWOOD GOLF CLUB PARTIAL ACQUISITION
After the 2016 Tax Day Flood, Triumph Golf approached the Harris County Flood Control District about acquiring portions of the Longwood Golf Club for flood risk mitigation projects. These projects may include improving channel conveyance of Little Cypress Creek as well as constructing new and/or expanding existing stormwater detention basins such as the existing Kluge Stormwater Detention Basin: www.hcfcd.org/F-28.
The Flood Control District finalized the purchase of nearly 80 acres of the Longwood Golf Club for $10 million through a voluntary agreement with Triumph Golf. The purchase allows the Flood Control District to consider future potential projects in the area, including a stormwater detention basin and channel conveyance improvements along Little Cypress Creek. This additional right-of-way allows for new Little Cypress Creek project alternatives that provide increased flood risk reduction benefits to the Longwood area.
A potential project is not included in the Flood Control District’s current capital program, and therefore does not have the necessary funding for construction. However, it will be evaluated and possibly included in future capital efforts. Additionally, stormwater detention needs to be constructed before channel conveyance improvements can begin to ensure flood risk is not increased for areas downstream of Longwood. As a potential project moves forward, community engagement will continue, including a formal Community Engagement Meeting to get feedback from residents and share important project milestones and timelines.
