Residents who appreciate meteorologist Jeff Lindner have created a GoFundMe account to “buy Jeff a vacation” for his work in calmly and consistently updating southeast Texas residents over the past week. After contacting the fan who started the account, Lindner thanked him for his kind gesture and decided to donate all funds to a charity helping flood victims.
“It’s overwhelming what has happened to our community,” said Lindner. “I’ve just been doing my job and I really wanted to get out to the residents what I would want to hear if I were sitting on the other end.”
Although Lindner believes he was just doing his job, it didn’t go unnoticed that he spent more than a week doing what most meteorologists do as a storm approaches --looking at countless models to determine the path of the storm. There are a lot of uncertainties when dealing with weather forecasts and as it was seen with Hurricane Harvey, the situation changes very quickly. As part of the Flood Control District’s efforts in monitoring rainfall and stream levels, Lindner felt he owed it to Harris County residents to maintain a flow of information in order for them to make quick, life-saving decisions.
Lindner cannot accept the money, but he would like to give it back to the flood victims, which is an appropriate course of action according to the Office of the Harris County Attorney. Those wishing to donate directly to victims of the flood could consider contributing to the Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund at https://ghcf.org/impact/#disaster
Lindner, a native Houstonian, graduated from Texas A&M in College Station, Texas, with a Bachelor of Science degree in meteorology. He began working with the Flood Control District in 2003 as a meteorologist. Jeff Lindner and his family are grateful for the kind thoughts of the community and are thankful for the outpouring of generosity.
