Construction Completed on Addicks Reservoir Watershed Repair Package 1

In an effort to keep you informed about the Harris County Flood Control District’s continuing improvements in Addicks Reservoir watershed, we are pleased to announce that the first package of the Addicks Reservoir Repair work is substantially complete. Construction contractors will demobilize over the coming weeks.

As a part of the Flood Control District’s overall maintenance operations, we are undertaking multiple comprehensive projects to evaluate and repair channels that drain into the Addicks Reservoir and where the Flood Control District has property rights. The Addicks Reservoir itself is owned and operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

This first package of repairs in the Addicks Reservoir watershed included efforts to address erosion and slope failures within the Flood Control District’s right-of-way and/or within the channel itself. Repairs also included work on concrete structures and storm outfall failures. Construction on Repair Package 1 began in Q1 2023 and is now substantially complete.

"Maintenance matters. It’s a known fact that when you regularly clean channels, you get results that reduce the risk of flooding,” Harris County Precinct 3 Commissioner Tom Ramsey stated. “This repair package is a prime example of how the Flood Control District has cleaned nearly five miles of ditching and removed more than 2,000 dump trucks of silt from our ditches. We need more of this, and I look forward to our continued work with the Flood Control District to do so.”

“We are deeply committed to making Harris County more resilient. To achieve this, we must both regularly maintain our infrastructure and complete existing flood control projects, said Harris County Precinct 4 Commissioner Lesley Briones.“ This bond project provides needed maintenance in the Addicks Reservoir watershed, where over 200,000 Harris County residents live, and demonstrates the power of partnerships in delivering greater protection before the next big flooding event. Together, we are—and will continue—delivering projects, progress, and protection for our families.”

“We are pleased with the progress we have made on the first package of repairs within the Addicks Reservoir watershed,” said Dr. Tina Petersen, Executive Director of the Flood Control District. “This project was included in the 2018 Bond Program and provides substantial and immediate benefits to residents in the area, making the surrounding communities safer from flooding.”

These efforts are part of the Flood Control District’s ongoing work to ensure the channels in the Addicks Reservoir watershed are functioning at design capacity as they carry stormwater out of surrounding neighborhoods and into the federal reservoir.

The Flood Control District works to reduce flooding across the region and is committed to keeping residents informed. For more information on this project, trail impacts or other Flood Control District efforts, please visit www.hcfcd.org/F-53.
