The Harris County Flood Control District is committed to improving and protecting our local environment. As part of this work, we will be conducting a prescribed burn on approximately 40 acres of prairie within the Greens Bayou Wetlands Mitigation Bank (HCFCD Unit Number P700-01-00). This site is located just southwest of the intersection of Beltway 8 and Lockwood Road (see map for details).
What is a Prescribed Burn, and Why is it Important?
A prescribed burn – also known as a controlled burn – is a carefully planned and professionally managed fire that helps:
• Reduce invasive plant species that threaten our native ecosystem
• Encourage the growth of native grasses and plants that support local wildlife
• Improve habitat quality for birds, pollinators, and other species
• Enhance overall land management, as an effective alternative to mowing and herbicide use
These environmentally beneficial burns are a proven conservation practice used across Texas and the country to maintain large natural landscapes.
What to Expect
The controlled burn will be managed by Lone Star Forestry (LSF), a state-certified burn management consultant, in coordination with the Texas Forest Service, Harris County Emergency Dispatch, and local fire departments.
• Timing: The burn is planned for March 2025, but the exact date will depend on weather conditions such as humidity, wind speed, and wind direction.
• Safety Measures: Extensive planning and monitoring will take place to ensure minimal risk to residents, businesses, and property.
• Smoke & Traffic Considerations: Smoke from the burn may be visible in the area. To keep motorists informed, electronic message boards will be placed along Beltway 8 service road. Please drive with caution near the project site.
