Maintenance Completion Notice: Debris Removal and Selective Clearing in Upper Cypress Creek

The Harris County Flood Control District has successfully completed its first large-scale debris removal and selective clearing effort in the uppermost reach of Cypress Creek.

This maintenance work stretched from the Waller County line to Katy Hockley Road and included:
• Removing nearly 200 fallen and hazardous trees
• Clearing out 600 cubic yards of organic debris — about 60 dump trucks’ worth
• Thinning underbrush and removing invasive species from approximately 45 acres (the equivalent of about 34 football fields) where they were blocking flow or limiting access
• Planting 1,380 native hardwood tree seedlings
Vegetation management like this helps stabilize streambanks, reduce erosion, and support healthier ecosystems.

We completed this work in partnership with Harris County Precinct 4 and in consultation with the Coastal Prairie Conservancy. It directly responds to feedback we received from the community and was possible thanks to increased maintenance funding approved by Harris County voters.
